When to take which test: a timeline from Grade 9 to submission
Most test stress comes from doing things in the wrong order, not from the tests themselves. Taken on a sensible schedule there is room for a first attempt, a retake, and still time to write the applications. Left late, one bad morning becomes the whole story.

In short
- Grades 9 and 10: protect your transcript and interests; one diagnostic test late in Grade 10 is the entire testing requirement.
- Grade 11: your first SAT or ACT attempt around the middle of the year, with a retake late in Grade 11 or very early in Grade 12.
- Grade 12: work backwards from your earliest deadline; for a US early round in early November, an October sitting is usually the last that works.
Grades 9 and 10: do almost nothing
This is the part families most often get wrong in the expensive direction. Coaching a Grade 9 student for the SAT is mostly wasted money, because the maths and reading being tested are still being taught.
What actually pays off in these years is the transcript, the subjects you choose, and starting something outside class you can stay with. All three matter more than an early test score, and none of them can be fixed later.
- One diagnostic test late in Grade 10 is useful, to see where you stand. That is the entire testing requirement for these two years.
- If English is not your first language of instruction, this is a good time to build reading speed - it helps every test you will eventually sit.
Grade 11: the year that matters
Grade 11 is when a first real attempt belongs. Sitting it here leaves room to retake without colliding with application season.
Two attempts is the normal, sensible number. A third is occasionally worth it. Beyond that, scores rarely move enough to justify the time, and the time is needed elsewhere.
- First SAT or ACT attempt: around the middle of Grade 11, after a proper block of preparation.
- Retake: late Grade 11 or very early Grade 12, once you know which sections cost you points.
- English test (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo): late Grade 11 or early Grade 12 is early enough. Scores are valid two years, so sitting it in Grade 9 wastes the validity window.
Grade 12: work backwards from the deadline
Do this arithmetic once, properly, and it removes most of the panic. Take your earliest application deadline, and count backwards.
Scores are not instant. Digital SAT results take days to a couple of weeks; English test results take up to about two weeks; sending scores to universities takes longer still. Your last usable test date is meaningfully earlier than your deadline, and that gap is where people get caught.
- Early rounds in the US typically fall in early November, which makes an October test date the practical last chance for most students.
- UK applications through UCAS run on their own earlier calendar for some courses and universities.
- If a test date is your only remaining option before a deadline, apply to that university in a later round rather than sending a rushed score.
For parents: where money is well and badly spent
- Badly: intensive coaching in Grades 9 and 10, and fourth or fifth attempts at a test.
- Well: one properly prepared attempt, a targeted retake on identified weaknesses, and official practice material rather than third-party imitations.
- Worth knowing: a score is only one input, and at many universities an optional one. A student who spends a whole year on test prep and nothing on their transcript or their activities has usually made a bad trade.
Common questions
How many times should my child take the SAT or ACT?
Two is normal and sensible. Three is sometimes justified. Past that, improvement is usually small and the preparation time is better spent on essays and grades.
Can we take the SAT in Grade 10?
You can, and a diagnostic is genuinely useful. Just treat it as information rather than a real attempt - much of the content has not been taught yet, and the score is not predictive.
When exactly is too late?
Work backwards from your earliest deadline and allow a few weeks for results and sending. For a US early round in early November, an October sitting is usually the last that works.
Do English test scores expire?
Generally after two years. That is why sitting one early in school is a waste - it can expire before you apply.
