What the estimate is actually built from

An admission chance is not a feeling. Ours is arithmetic over four things, and the calculator shows you each one rather than handing you a number and asking you to trust it.

• The university's own published acceptance rate — for US institutions this comes from IPEDS and the College Scorecard, the same figures universities report to the Department of Education, carrying the date we last checked them.
• Your academic standing, read in your own board's terms — a 38 in the IB, a 95% CBSE aggregate and three A*s at A-Level are not the same number and cannot be compared as one. Each is placed against the intake it is actually being judged against.
• Test scores where the university still uses them — SAT and ACT ranges where published, and correctly ignored where a university is genuinely test-blind rather than merely test-optional.
• The shape of your profile beyond grades — activities, leadership, and how selective the course itself is, because computer science and classics at the same university are different admissions problems.

Reach, target and likely — and why the labels matter

Every university you look at is sorted into reach, target or likely, and the sort is the point. A list of nine reaches is not ambition, it is a year with no offers. A balanced list is the single most useful thing a student can build early, and it is what the calculator is really for.

What it will not do

It will not tell you that you are certain to get in anywhere, because nobody can. Highly selective universities reject thousands of students who meet every published bar, and any tool implying otherwise is selling something. Where we have no verified data for an institution, the estimate says so on its face instead of inventing a figure.
